Review: Bamboo Washable Breast Pads

With breastfeeding comes the inevitable leaky boobs. It's just one of those things that happens which means the best course of action is to wear breast pads in your bra to stop any leakage soaking your bra and top. When I breastfed my son 5 years ago I used disposable breast pads however they were a bit annoying i.e. always scrunched/rolled up or weren't that soft so ended up irritating my nipples! So when the lovely Keira from Mama Designs asked if I would like to review their Bamboo Washable Breast Pads I jumped at the chance.

First a little intro from Mama Designs: "Hi My name is Keira and my business Mama Designs Ltd, makes innovative products for babies that make parents' lives easier. All of my products are designed with love as they were inspired by my babies (Sam and Lily) for you to use on yours. Everything has been road tested by mums and babies and fully tested to UK safety standards. I hope you find them useful! Keira x".

The super soft bamboo breast pads are ultra absorbent with a double layer and laminate backing to help prevent leaks. Each pack contains 8 reusable bamboo breast pads 4 x large (13cm) pads and 4 x regular (11cm) pads. The larger pads can be used for at night when you might not be feeding as much, if you feel you have a heavy milk flow or just for extra coverage. I've used the larger size at night and have used them during the day when out and about and they work great for catching and containing milk leakage. They're quite slim so don't make your chest look lumping like some other breast pads and bamboo is naturally antibacterial. These breast pads are easy to use with a little label sewn onto one side which goes to the outside of your bra and the none label side against your breast.

I use a nursing bra when feeding so when I unclip the front and pull down to feed my baby the bamboo breast pad does scrunch up however it doesn't leak any already absorbed breast milk and it's easy to sort back into place again plus it's still soft and smooth. The same can't be said when using disposable breast pads as they sometimes stick together (if they have the sticky part to stick to your bra) and when you're constantly clipping and unclipping your bra up and down they become lumping and uncomfortable to wear.

One big and one normal sized breast pad.
These breast pads are £10.95 per pack and can be washed at 40o. I think you might need 2 packs to keep you going in case you need to change during the day or for night time etc as I'm not sure you'd be able to have them all washed and ready in time for the next use. I certainly didn't any way and was caught short one day when I'd run out of disposable pads and these bamboo one were all in the wash! They are comfortable and easy to wear though so I'd definitely purchase some more and the price is reasonable. Disposable pads are around £5-£10 per pack for around 60 (depending on the brand etc of course) so if you think about it you're saving yourself a good amount of money and also looking after the environment. These breast pads are available from John Lewis and of course direct from Mama Designs.

As you can see the breast pad sits in the bra comfortably.
The only issue I have with them is that sometimes the fibres of the breast pad can stick to your nipples so I'm finding that I have to brush all the little fibres off before feeding Harlow as I don't want her eating the little fibres. After a couple of washes there doesn't seem to be as many fibres sticking to my nipples so fingers crossed the more I use the pads the less this will happen. Keira from Mama Designs also assures me that after a few washes the breast pads do stop malting. It's not so much of an issue when in the house it's more when I'm out and about and Harlow gets hungry, I have to try and get myself organised discreetly before feeding her and trying to make sure no fibres are stuck to my nipples takes more time and fiddling around.

No lumps on my bra from the breast pad.
Overall lovely product, very comfortable and easy to wear, washes perfectly well at 40o as stated and looks the same when it comes out of the wash as it did when it went in. It catches plenty of milk leakage and so far I haven't had any leaks from the breast pad on to my bra or top etc which is great. The price like I said I thought was reasonable for what you get compared to disposable breast pads but you may need a couple of packs to keep you going through washes etc. My only issue as stated is that sometimes the fibres of the breast pad stick to your nipples which is annoying when trying to feed quickly as you have to brush the fibres off first but after a few washes this seems to be less.

Mummy's rating - 7.5/10

I have these too and love them. I've never had an issue with malting I have to say, but I did wash them a couple of times before use. I love that they are just as soft now after 3 months of use! x

I only discovered reusable breastpads when it came to feeding third time round and they must have saved me a pure fortune - if only I'd used them from the first baby!
Lovely to have you linking up with #TriedTested this week x
