Children's Books That Are Fun for Mum & Dad Too

We absolutely love reading in our household and we never get away with no stories at bedtime. In fact it's so much a part of Logan's routine that he's started asking for 2-3 stories before bedtime at night now! He'll have his bath, get dried, brush his teeth and put pj's on, a quick lightsaber dual with Daddy then it's snuggles in bed for stories. The other half and I started this routine (apart from the lightsaber dual, that's recent!) with Logan when he was maybe coming up for a year old and would actually listen instead of jumping around and trying to play. He would lay down in his cot and we would sit beside and read stories. It's stuck ever since.

Kids love a good story but sometimes as parents you can get a bit fed up with reading the same story over and over again. It's not a bad thing, it happens to everyone so here's a little list I've put together of great children's books that are fun for Mum and Dad too.

Aliens Love Underpants
You may have heard of this book before as I'm sure it's won a few awards but basically it's amazing. It rhymes the whole way through and is actually very funny. You'll read it so much you'll know the words by heart which makes it even funnier when you add in actions for your child as well. It's about a bunch of funny alien's who have a love of pants, as you guessed it there's no pants in space so they fly down to earth and get up to all sorts of pants mischief. Last year at the Edinburgh Festival there was even an Aliens Love Underpants play which we took Logan to and he loved it. Sat all the way through and knew all the words, was brilliant. This book usually retails for around £5.99 however I grabbed it for a bargain price in Poundland.

Father Christmas Needs a Wee
This is a brilliant book, yes it's not Christmas yet but you can read this all year through. It's basically a counting book which helps your child become familiar with numbers. It describes how Santa goes from house to house drinking and eating all the different goodies. So for example it says; "At number 1, one hot choc yum. At number 2, two plates of stew" etc and so on. But then after eating all the goodies Santa realises he's not left any presents at the house so the counting begins again with presents and also how poor Santa is bursting for the loo after all those treats. The book rhymes as well which makes it all the more fun. I think Logan actually knows this by heart now we've read it so much. Like Aliens Love Underpants this was also made into a play and we went along to see it at the Edinburgh Festival last year. All I can say is absolutely hilarious. It was a small venue and we were practically sat on the stage, very interactive and lots of adult humour thrown in for good measure. This book retails for around £5.99 but you can sometimes get it for a bargain on Amazon.

There was a Wee Lassie who swallowed a Midgie
If you haven't heard of this book before then you're losing out. It's very similar to There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly but so much better. This is the Scottish version! Throughout the story the wee lassie swallows creature after creature from puffins to Scottie dogs and even the Loch Ness Monster! Logan thinks this is hilarious and is always eager to see what she swallows next (even though he already knows). The illustrations are really good too and you get to see inside the wee lassies tummy to see what she's eaten. This book retails for £5.99 too and is a must have. I think The Book People website currently have this for £4.79 so saving a pound or so but if you've got any discount codes i.e. 10% off and free delivery then even better.

Grizzly Dad
Logan and I picked this book for Daddy as a Father's Day present but it's been a huge hit ever since. It's about a grumpy Dad who gets up in a bad mood and shuffles back to bed for a rest. When his son goes to wake him up, instead of Dad it's a big Grizzly Bear! They have great fun and get up to all sorts, lovely story. And if you have a child who has a grizzly Dad at times then this story is perfect. The book retails for around £5.99 but can be found cheaper on Amazon or on eBay if you don't mind a used copy.

Hairy Maclary's Rumpus At The Vet
There's lots of books in the Hairy Maclary series but our favourite has to be Rumpus At The Vet. It's a poetic rhyming tale of Hairy Maclary's trip to the vet and how it all goes wrong from the start when a parrot 'tweaks' his tail. Poor pooch. It's quite a fast paced booked and I'm sure you'll be asked to read it a few times. I certainly have to! It's the usual retail price of £5.99 but I'm sure you can find it cheaper if you shop around. Never pay full price!

So there you go, some of our fav books at the moment and ones which aren't tedious for Mum's and Dad's to read. In fact I think I enjoy reading them more than Logan sometimes especially when you get to be silly and put on funny voices. What are your favourite books to read to your little one at the moment?

Aliens love underpants is a firm fav with Noah and the twins. We haven't read any of the others but might have to add them to our little library x

I love Hairy Maclary and need to read Rumpus at the vets. I also like the look of Aliens in Underpants. I've seen it around but not read it yet. Thanks for sharing a great selection of kids books.
