A Family Friendly Scottish Cottage

Back in January I wrote about the importance of family holidays. I really believe travel is a great learning opportunity for little ones but this doesn’t necessarily mean going aboard. There are lots of lovely places to visit in the UK and being in Scotland myself means there’s plenty of countryside to roam and explore up here.

One of our favourite places to visit, discovered back in 2016, has to be the little cottage we frequent up near Wick in the Scottish Highlands. It’s a row of old fisherman’s cottages which have been beautiful restored and converted into classic accommodation for 6 people. It’s owned by the Landmark Trust who do an amazing job of rescuing old and dilapidated  historic buildings up and down the country. Next door (attached) to the cottage we normally rent is a little 1 bedroom cottage owned by the Landmark Trust that sleeps two. Perfect for a couple.

What I really like about the cottage we hire is that there’s no TV, no wifi and you get literally no mobile signal what so ever! I know if you’re like me you’ll be having palpitations about not being able to contact the outside world but it’s honestly the best thing that could ever happen to you. When you swing open the cottage door you have a beautiful picturesque pebble beach right there, it’s only two steps away and you’re on the beach. There’s lots of rocks to climb, ponds to dip and seal watching to be had not to mention the birds on the cliffs or the trout rushing up the river. This is what it’s all about people, getting yourself and the kids back into nature and actually enjoying it.

Being away from all technology is pretty empowering and not once when we’re at this cottage do the kids ask for the TV or wifi to watch YouTube and we’ve visited 3 times so far. We’ve normally only ever been in Winter months but our latest trip saw us booking up for the beginning of June to celebrate the other half’s birthday. The journey up was a bit stressful as I was grumpy and the kids wouldn’t stop annoying each other but once there all that pressure and stress washed away. A quick walk along the beach to listen to the waves and calm was restored.

We took the dogs with us again as the cottage is dog friendly (up to two dogs) and the other half’s parents and granny came along too. The sun shone the whole weekend we were there and it really couldn’t have been better. We caught crabs from the rock pools, let the dogs and kids explore everywhere they could, visited family and Granda managed to take Logan on his first fishing trip. They didn’t catch any fish sadly but Logan was super excited and can’t wait to go fishing again.

I really can’t wait to book up for our next trip to the cottage but in the meantime check out some of the lovely photos I got from our recent visit.

Love the idea of a technology free holiday, I'm always trying to make my husband play board games etc with me in the evenings and this would give him no choice! Looks like you had a FAB time, those crabs are a little terrifying though, I'm not looking forward to my son being at an age where he likes things like that!!

Lovely pictures, sounds like you had a great time and love the technology free time. A good black out is refreshing sometimes isn't it?

You've made me want to find a cottage hidden away somewhere for a little family break! I'd definitely go technology free if we did xo
