The Medicine Cabinet - What to Stock for Kids

Well I think we can all see that winter weather isn't going to go away for a while, gale force freezing winds and heavy down pours of rain are a force to be reckoned with but there's another force out there hard at work! The pesky flu bug! It's always hard to watch your child become ill with flu or cold like virus and sometimes it can be worse than that with chest infections doing the rounds but what should you have in your Medicine Cabinet to help your little one when they're feeling a bit under the weather? Here's a list to get you started.

Calpol/ Nurofen
Every medicine cabinet for a child should have some sort of Calpol or Nurofen for when they're temperature starts to sore. Don't get me wrong, you shouldn't always rush for the Calpol to dope up your child but I think all parents know when to trust their own instincts and administer some temperature reducing medicine. They normally come in 2 flavours, either orange or strawberry and Logan doesn't seem to mind either one so we have no preference. The Calpol bottles generally come with plastic spoons but I've noticed the Nurofen comes with a handy syringe to sook up the medicine and give it to your child. Excellent for younger children who won't open their mouth for a spoon, it's also good to prevent batting little hands from throwing the medicine around the room and onto your carpets!

Tixylix
This stuff is brilliant for soothing sore throats from all the coughing your little one does. We normally go for the honey and lemon flavour as honey has some great healing properties of it's own so extra benefit however please remember honey cannot be given to children under 1 year old so this would not be suitable for them. Not to panic though tixylix have other flavours without honey.

Vapour Rub
Having some form of vapour rub to hand to rub on your child's chest at night when they go down to sleep is essential. It helps to clear their airways and get some much needed sleep. We like to use the Vapour Stick from Naturally Cool Kids. It's a handy stick of vapour rub, kind of like a lipstick but much bigger. You just take the lid off, rub some on your child's chest and back and you're done. No fuss and no messy vapour stuff on your hands. Plus it's all natural!

Sudafed Plug-in
Now I've said Sudafed as this seems to be the only one in the local supermarkets I could find that was suitable for children. It's exactly the same as the adults and comes with some refills. Just stick in one of those little tablets, plug it into the wall, switch it on and away you go. I never like to leave the plug-ins on all night though so I put it on when Logan goes to bed at 7pm then I switch it off at 10pm when I go to bed. This usually helps to clear his nose so he can breathe easily.

Thermometer
This isn't medication (obviously) but when it comes to colds, flus and nasty bugs these are often accompanied by a high temperature in your child. I purchased the Braun ThermoScan 5 IRT4520 Ear Thermometer from Amazon back in May 2011 and it has been brilliant. It's on offer at the moment for £27.19 from amazon. We tried to use ones which went under your arm but for a wriggley child they take far too long to reach the temperature of your child. This ear thermometer does it instantly.

So there you have it, a handful of medicines that could be handy to keep in your cabinet at this time of year. We've had to use them all recently with Logan coming down with a back cough and temperature so all very handy things to keep stock of. I'd love to know if there's any kind of medication or remedy you swear by for helping your child get over their cold/ flu.
